Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced the signing of Sparta Prague striker Tomáš Čvančara on a five-year deal.

The 22-year-old Czech international was the desired option for new Gladbach manager Gerardo Seoane and sporting director Roland Virkus. The reigning Czech champions will receive €10.5m for the striker, whose five-year deal will see him remain at the Foals until the summer of 2028.

“Tomáš is a striker that poses a real threat on goal, coupled with plenty of pace,” remarked Virkus. “He’s still young but has been playing professionally for several years and broke into the Czech Republic national team this season. He’s a very ambitious player and really wanted to join Borussia.”

“It’s great to be here. Borussia-Park is a fantastic stadium. I can’t wait to join training, to play here and score goals,” commented Čvančara. A similar return to his last season with Sparta would be a dream debut campaign for the 22-year-old who scored 15 goals and collected five assists in 30 appearances last term.

Čvančara is considered to be the natural replacement for the departed Marcus Thuram, who leaves for Gladbach for Inter Milan after four years with the Foals. Standing at 6’2”, the Czech striker is less than an inch smaller than Thuram which means that he will offer the side a physical presence in the attack.

So far this summer Gladbach have recruited smartly, despite losing the majority of their key players. Seoane will look to galvanise a relatively young squad in what could be an interesting Gladbach side to spectate next season.
