Celtic have parted company with French head coach Wilfried Nancy after just eight matches, following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Rangers, as announced via an official club statement. The 48-year-old was appointed on a two-and-a-half-year contract in December after the conclusion of the MLS season, arriving from Columbus Crew, where he had won the MLS Cup in 2023 and been named MLS Manager of the Year in 2024. However, his first experience of European management has come to a swift end.
Nancy oversaw six defeats in eight matches, with performances and results deteriorating rapidly after an initially stable interim period under Martin O’Neill, who had won seven of his eight games following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation in October.
Celtic made an alarming start under the Frenchman, with Nancy becoming the first manager in the club’s history to lose his first two matches in charge. Defeats followed in the Premier Sports Cup final against St Mirren, as well as league losses to Dundee United, Motherwell and Rangers, the latter proving decisive.
A run of four consecutive defeats represented Celtic’s worst sequence since 1978 under Jock Stein, underlining the scale of the collapse. Brief league victories over Aberdeen and Livingston did little to halt the downward trajectory.GFFN | George Boxall
