Olympique Lyonnais have confirmed that Diego Moreira (29) has returned to parent club Chelsea. The Portuguese winger had signed on loan until the end of the season, however, he has failed to establish himself at the Ligue 1 club and therefore returns to England early.
Moreira has been a peripheral figure for Lyon, featuring just 10 times for the club in all competitions since making the move to the Groupama Stadium at the end of the summer transfer window. In a struggling side, he failed to establish himself, starting just four times for Les Gones.
On Sunday, Moreira took to social media to announce his imminent departure from OL. “Lyon supporters, today marks the end of my loan with OL and I wanted to thank you for your welcome from the first day, the first match, from my first steps at the Groupama Stadium. These are memories that will be etched into me. I hope that the players, as well as the supporters, will reach their objectives in this second half of the season. Always in my heart. Go Lyon!” he said on Instagram.
Lyon have now confirmed Moreira’s return, thanking the Portuguese winger for his time at the club, and wishing him the best for the future.
Having already played for two clubs this season, he will remain with the Chelsea side until the end of the season and will hope to work his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans. Lyon, meanwhile, are expected to replace Moreira with Arnaut Danjuma, who is currently on loan at Everton from Villarreal.
