Galatasaray have announced the signing of Dries Mertens, who has joined the Turkish club on a free transfer.
The 35-year-old has attracted interest from various clubs all over the world this summer, and Galatasaray threw their name into the mix when they offered him a contract worth a net salary of €4 million.
He was said to be tempted by the offer at the time and has now put pen to paper on the deal that reportedly lasts one year but will be extended by another if his new club qualifies for the Champions League.
“I’m very happy to be here. I spent 9 years in Italy and now I felt ready to make a change,” Mertens said.
“When I received an offer from a team like Galatasaray, I was honoured. I took a perfect step. It was a very nice welcome. I’m used to fans like that from Napoli, but it was crazy that our fans were waiting for us until late at night.
“I came here to succeed. I signed a one-year contract but I would like to stay longer. I came to show why they wanted me. I want to show my strength on the field. I will give everything for this team.
“I’m a player who always wants to score goals and win games on the pitch. I will work hard for this.”
