FC Nantes have this afternoon announced the signing of French midfielder Florent Mollet (31) from Schalke 04. The Loire-Atlantique outfit, currently thirteenth in the Ligue 1 standings, have reportedly paid a €1.5m fee to the bottom-placed Bundesliga team.
Mollet started his career at Dijon in 2012, then going to Metz four years later before joining Montpellier in 2018. Mollet made 173 appearances for the Hérault club, scoring 28 goals and providing 18 assists. The French midfielder joined the newly-promoted Bundesliga side last summer on a three-year deal and played only nine games and scored one goal for the Gelsenkirchen side.
“When the request from Nantes arrived a few days ago, it was the player’s explicit wish to be able to seize this opportunity. Personal reasons also played a role,” says Schalke 04 sporting director Peter Knäbel. “We wish Florent all the best.” Mollet has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Les Canaris.
An experienced, hard-working midfielder with a powerful strike on the ball and a keen eye for goal, the Dijon native looks a very smart signing for such a cut-price deal. The player spoke of his delight after joining a “legendary” football club that holds a special place in French football history. Mollet will wear the #25 jersey shirt for Antoine Kombouaré’s side.
