Former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin (33) has signed for Ligue 1 side FC Nantes, Les Canaris have confirmed. Coquelin was a free agent since the expiry of his Villarreal contract last June. He notably went close to joining Nantes during the summer but an injury scuppered the move. Now, Coquelin has finally signed for the 8-time French champions on a short-term deal, valid until June 30.
The former Arsenal midfielder trained with Antoine Kombouaré’s side this week at Nantes’ La Jonelière training ground. He was given the all-clear by the club’s fitness department. “He is an experienced player who will bring us a lot”, said Kombouaré. “He can play as a 6 or 8. He is very strong and can bring balance to our midfield.” Coquelin will wear the No. 13 jersey at Nantes. He is the third player to join Nantes in the winter transfer window after goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and Strasbourg centre-back Saïdou Sow. Coquelin could make his Nantes debut on Sunday at Reims.
