SC Freiburg midfielder Merlin Röhl’s loan out to Everton FC has been officially confirmed. In a deal very much reminiscent of the loan Freiburg once constructed for Brentford striker Kevin Schade, Germany’s Breisgauer could ultimately profit handsomely from the transaction. The Bundesliga outfit will be due around €25m if the Toffees opt to exercise their purchase clause.
Freiburg ultimately pocketed approximately the same amount for Schade, who is now considered a €30m-valued player. Röhl must first regain his touch. The exceptional box-to-box talent simply hasn’t lived up to his potential over the course of the last calendar year.
Like his fellow transfer deadline day SCF departure Noah Weißhaupt, Röhl finds himself nowhere near the German national team conversation these days. It remains worth noting that Röhl did achieve some success with the Germany U21s this past summer.
“There had been interest from England for some time,” Freiburg sporting director Klemens Hartenbach noted in a club statement. “and now an agreement has been reached that is satisfactory for all three parties involved. Merlin’s move to the Premier League shows once again that young players can confidently choose SC Freiburg as their path. We wish Merlin every success with the Toffees.”
“It’s the right time for me to move to Everton,” Röhl added in his own statement. “It feels like a turning point for the club. The future looks really bright, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it. Everton fans are passionate and demand hard work, and I like that because it fits with what I can bring to the table.”
