Goalkeeper joins LaLiga rivals in search of regular playing time

Official: Girona announce loan acquisition of Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona
Girona have confirmed the loan signing of Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona until the end of the 2025 /26 season.
Spanish club Girona announced on Tuesday 20 January the arrival of Marc-Andre ter Stegen on six month loan from Barcelona as the Germany international looks for regular minutes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced goalkeeper completed his medical on Tuesday and was left out of Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League squad for the match against Slavia Prague clearing the way for the move.
Ter Stegen will now spend the remainder of the 2025 /26 season under head coach Michel aiming to regain rhythm and match sharpness.
Barcelona agreed to the deal while continuing to cover most of the player’s salary easing Girona’s financial burden and facilitating the temporary switch during the winter transfer window..
As part of the agreement,, Barcelona inserted “fear clause” that prevents Ter Stegen from featuring when Girona face his parent club in LaLiga next month.
The clause underlines Barcelona’s control over the move while allowing the goalkeeper to play regularly against other opponents.
The decision reflects Ter Stegen’s priority at this stage of his career.. With the World Cup approaching in 2026, the 32 year old wants consistent game time to strengthen his case for selection with Germany after period of limited action in Barcelona.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick publicly supported the transfer during his press conference on Tuesday. He praised Ter Stegen’s qualities on and off the pitch describing the move as the right step for the goalkeeper at this moment.
Flick highlighted Ter Stegen’s professionalism & expressed hope that the loan spell would help him return to top form. The German coach also pointed out that regular matches in La Liga could improve Ter Stegen’s chances of making the national squad for the next World Cup.
