Ian Cathro has been officially named the new manager of Ligue 2 club AS Saint-Étienne. The Scot’s deal with the French club runs until 2028.

Saint-Étienne opted against extending Philippe Montanier’s contract at the end of the season. This came following the club’s failure to secure promotion back to Ligue 1, despite succeeding in retaining their key players at the start of the campaign.

Cathro, who managed Hearts and who has also had roles as the assistant manager at Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Valencia, has managed Portuguese side Estoril since July 2024.

The Scot led them to an eighth and a tenth-place finish in his two seasons. He had two further years remaining on his deal at the Portuguese club, however, following negotiations, an agreement was reached to buy Cathro out of the final two years of his deal.

He arrives at ASSE with the objective of leading the club back into Ligue 1. The club failed to do so, despite retaining their big names, last season.
