After a few teases, it has now been made official. Lamine Yamal will be Barcelona’s new No. 10 moving forward, taking over the legendary jersey number from Ansu Fati.

The announcement was made today ahead of a special ceremony during which the 18-year-old winger will also sign his new contract with the club until 2031 – in the presence of his family, friends, club executives, including president Joan Laporta, and his agent Jorge Mendes.

The new contract had been agreed upon and announced in late May, but the club and the player were waiting for him to turn 18 years old before the official signing ceremony could take place.

With the new deal, Lamine commits his future to Barça until 2031 and is shielded by a mammoth €1 billion release clause.

Lamine is already entering his third full season in his senior career at the age of only 18 and is now considered one of the best attackers in the game after he enjoyed a spectacular 2024/25 campaign.

There were calls for him to be handed the No. 10 last year itself, but the youngster opted against making the switch out of respect for Ansu, who had returned from his loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Now, with Ansu leaving for AS Monaco this summer, the No. 10 shirt became vacant again and after having dropped hints that he was going to inherit the number, Lamine has officially been confirmed as the owner of the Blaugrana #10 kit.

A shirt with a rich history – worn by greats like Diego Maradona, Romario, Hristo Stoichkov, Gheorghe Hagi, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Lionel Messi – Lamine has a big responsibility to live up to and carry forward the legacy of the Barça No. 10.

Comparisons with Messi have followed Lamine, a contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, in his short professional career, and they are bound to increase now that he will inherit the iconic shirt.
