Official: Lionel Messi called up by Argentina for international farewell | OneFootball

Barcelona icon Lionel Messi has been afforded a call-up to the latest Argentine national team squad for the upcoming international break.

This comes with a view to affording the veteran attacker a fitting sendoff following the conclusion of his career in the colours of his beloved Albiceleste.

Messi of course recently announced his decision to hang up his boots on the international front. After a challenging summer which culminated in defeat in the World Cup final being swiftly followed by the passing of his father, the 39-year-old publicly announced his retirement from duty with Argentina.

As alluded to above, though, this has not stopped Lionel Scaloni from affording Messi one final call on the part of his country.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been included in Argentina’s setup for the fast-approaching September international break:

‘Lionel Messi will have a farewell with the Argentina National Team on October 6. He’s gonna say goodbye at Argentina’s friendly against Benin at the Monumental, Buenos Aires.’
