Mainz have announced that they have parted ways with head coach Bo Henriksen, with the club currently 18th in the Bundesliga.

The 05ers are last in the Bundesliga following a 4-0 loss to Freiburg at the weekend, and have only won one game this whole season, while in the Conference League, they are yet to secure qualification out of the league phase.

On leaving Mainz, Henriksen said:

“Mainz 05 is a wonderful club with wonderful people and wonderful fans. We achieved so much together, and I am truly grateful for all the experiences and for our time together. Thank you for the incredible support! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to play the same successful football this season, even though we fought for it right to the end. That’s football sometimes. I wish the club and the team all the very best and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the next matches and for a successful season.”

Henriksen took charge of Mainz in February 2024, with the club in a similar position to what they are in right now. Under the Dane, the 05ers had a remarkable turnaround and were able to somehow avoid relegation. Then, in his second season in charge, he led the club into the Conference League while they were in contention for the Champions League for much of the season, too, and one of the only teams to beat Bayern Munich.

What next for Mainz?

Under-23 head coach Benjamin Hofmann will take temporary charge at the Mewa Arena while a permanent replacement is found. Hofmann has won the under-19 championship with Mainz with a squad including Nelson Weiper and Brajan Gruda.

There are three games left until the winter break, so it would not be surprising if Mainz uses those three weeks to find Henriksen’s successor.
