Mamadou Sangaré (23) has succeeded Achraf Hakimi in winning the Marc-Vivien Foé award, handed to the best African player in Ligue 1 in any given year.

It was Paris Saint-Germain’s Hakimi who took home the award, attributed by RFI and France 24, last season, having helped PSG to a fourth-consecutive Ligue 1 title, whilst also leading the club – ultimately – to glory in the UEFA Champions League and Coupe de France.

Sangaré beats Camara and Niakhaté to the prize

This season, the award has gone to RC Lens’ Sangaré. In his debut season in France’s top-flight, the midfielder has played 28 games so far. In that time, he has scored three goals and registered four assists. He has also helped the club to what will almost certainly be a second-place finish in the league. Mathematically, they can still win the league, but due to their inferior goal difference, it is extremely unlikely.

Lens and Sangaré could yet end the season with silverware. They will face OGC Nice in the final of the Coupe de France. The Mali international beat AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Olympique Lyonnais’ Moussa Niakhaté to the prize.
