Cypriot club Apollon Limassol have announced today that an agreement has been reached with French attacking midfielder Mathieu Valbuena over a one-year contract.
The 38-year-old had left Olympiacos at the end of his contract earlier this summer, having won three league titles and made 150 appearances for the Greek side since joining in 2019.
The former Marseille and Lyon man’s latest move is subject to a successful medical, with the former French international having joined up with his likely future teammates at the their pre-season training camp in Slovakia. The Cypriots finished fifth in the league last season, and have not qualified for any European competition.
In a recent interview with L’Équipe, the veteran had indicated that he could have joined another Greek club, but he did not want to join one of Olympiacos’ domestic rivals. He also pointed ou t that a return to France was an option, but not a priority – in particular a return to his formative club Bordeaux in Ligue 2. Instead, he has opted to continue playing abroad, this time in a new country.
