SC Freiburg have announced the signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter on a free transfer.
This comes in the same week when Freiburg sold their highly-rated centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck to Borussia Dortmund.
Ginter will be an experienced replacement for Schlotterbeck with the added bonus of not costing any transfer fee.
Ginter was born in Freiburg im Breisgau and was a former youth player at Freiburg before moving to Dortmund in 2014 and then onto Mönchengladbach in 2017.
Talking about his move, the defender said: “I wanted to do something very special in my career and there is nothing more special for me than returning to the sports club and to my home county. The development of the entire club, the potential of the team and the special way of communicating with the club officials in the past few weeks – finding all of this in my home county can be described as a stroke of luck these days. This overall package just fitted perfectly.”
