Clermont Foot are returning to Ligue 2, however, Maxime Gonalons (35) won’t be joining the club in France’s second tier, as revealed in a communiqué.
Les Auvergnats finished bottom of Ligue 1 last season. They have been in France’s top flight for three seasons after their historic promotion from Ligue 2 in 2021. It was the first time that Clermont Foot had competed in the top division of French football. After a mid-table finish in 2022/23 – a campaign in which Gonalons played a starring role, they did not fare as well this year.
Whilst their relegation was only confirmed in the final weeks, Pascal Gastien’s side were cut adrift for much of the season. Gastien will leave the club as will former France international Gonalons (eight caps). In his second and final season at the club, Gonalons played 23 times in all competitions, scoring once and registering one assist.
“I have really enjoyed my two years here. I met warm people at the club and in the city so I will take only happy memories away,” he said in the communiqué, confirming his departure.
