Kniat's team of assistant coaches comprised of Dani Jara and Janik Steringer are also leaving the 2.Bundesliga club for good.

"I am grateful for this time and would like to thank all employees, management, the entire staff, our fans, and of course my players.

"It's been a pleasure and a special experience working for this traditional club every single day," said the 40-year-old in his statement.

Kniat led Arminia Bielefeld to the DFB-Pokal final last season and back to the second division, among other achievements.

“After several discussions and a joint analysis, we also exchanged views on further development steps and realized that our future plans were not aligned.

“As a result, we unanimously concluded that it was better to end the collaboration with a positive end to the season and the successful relegation battle,” sporting director Michael Mutzel explained.
