Monaco centre-back Chrislain Matsima (20) has been recalled from his loan spell at Lorient, both clubs have announced. The 20-year-old Frenchman was originally on loan with Ligue 1’s surprise package of the season until June, but Les Monégasques have recalled him in order to bolster their defence. Matsima is tied to a contract with his parent club Monaco that is due to expire in 2025. A return to the Principality should also grant him more playing time, as he was third in the pecking order to the defensive partnership of Julien Laporte and Montassar Talbi in Brittany. The U20 French international played only six games with Les Merlus, including two starts.
Monaco hold the current season’s record for the most points dropped from a winning position, having conceded 17 points after taking the lead during this campaign. Matsima’s return to Monaco should help to plug the leaks at the back, especially given the departure of French international centre-back Benoît Badiashile to Chelsea earlier in the window. Monaco are fourth-placed in the Ligue 1 standings and face a Europa League playoff round next month against Bayer Leverkusen.
