The wait for a Premier League away win this season was worth it, as they smashed the scouse mackems 4-1.

Two excellent headed finishes from Malick Thiaw, his first ever goals for Newcastle United.

Nick Woltemade with an exquisite lob.

Whilst Lewis Miley’s left footed strike went straight through Jordan Pickford.

An excellent team performance against Everton and no weak links, as they all pulled together to deliver a very important boost in the Premier League.

For Eddie Howe and Newcastle United though, some injury worries ahead of a busy schedule, starting with Spurs at SJP on Tuesday night.

There were six changes to the eleven that started against Marseille.

Ramsdale, Hall, Joelinton, Miley, Elanga, Woltemade

Pope, Schar, Willock, Tonali, Gordon, Jacob Murphy

Eddie Howe explaining why so many changes:

“We made changes because I wanted no fatigue on the pitch.

I didn’t want the feeling that I had after the Brentford game, the West Ham game, where I felt we were tired and lethargic.

“With that in mind, I think we have to trust the squad and use the squad.

“They repaid that faith.

“The players that came in, I thought, were excellent.

“The players that remained from the previous games did well too.

“I thought that we had a good look about us.

“I thought we had our athleticism and pace in the right areas of the pitch.”

Howe also issuing this oNewcastle United injury update on two players who dropped out of the squad that went to Marseille.

Ahead of the match, Eddie Howe said that Sven Botman was struggling with a back problem, following the Everton match the NUFC boss had this update:

“Sven is going to see a specialist this week.

“Fingers crossed he is not out for too long.

“Any absence of a player with Sven’s qualities, especially with the injuries that he has had, is a blow for us.

“So, fingers crossed.”

Nick Pope was missing from the squad at Everton, with the goalkeeper picking up a groin problem in training on Friday.

Eddie Howe asked after the Everton game whether Nick Pope would have kept his place, if not sustaining that injury:

“Whether Nick would have started [against Everton] is for me to know.

“We are disappointed to lose Nick, we can’t afford to lose any player.

“He suffered an injury just towards the end of training [on Friday].

“I didn’t name the team yesterday, we were just training as normal, he was just wrong-footed on a shot and just felt something in his groin, more after training than in that moment.

“We hope he is not out for long, we need him back.

“He will have a scan in the next few days to find the damage.”
