2006 World Cup winner Massimo Oddo has officially been announced as the new head coach of Milan Futuro, replacing Daniele Bonera, who was relieved of his duties on Monday.

“The Club welcomes back Massimo and wishes him and his staff all the best in the job,” A statement on the club website read. Oddo came through Milan’s academy and returned for a second spell in 2007.

Oddo appointed as Milan Futuro head coach

Milan Futuro, the reserve side for the Rossoneri first team, was officially launched in the summer. Milan are one of three Serie A clubs to have an affiliate side competing in Serie C, along with Juventus Next Gen and Atalanta U23.

It hasn’t been the smoothest of starts to life in the senior game for the Futuro side, who currently sit in 18th in Serie C Girone B, with just four wins and 10 draws from their first 28 games of the season, totalling 22 points.

This run of poor form led to the dismissal of the team’s inaugural coach, Bonera, whose sacking was confirmed on Monday.

The Rossoneri have turned to Oddo to replace him. The 48-year-old was a member of Italy’s triumphant World Cup side in 2006 and had a lengthy Serie A career with the likes of Milan, Napoli, Hellas Verona and Lazio.

Since hanging up his boots, Oddo has held coaching jobs at various levels of the Italian pyramid, beginning with Pescara, whom he led to promotion via the Serie B play-offs during his first full season.

He also has top-flight experience with Udinese as well as previous roles with Crotone, Perugia, Padova and SPAL.
