Como 1907 have announced that Raphaël Varane has been appointed as a member of the club’s board.
The former 2018 World Cup winner with France had recently announced his retirement from football after he suffered a knee injury during his debut for Como. Varane had struggled with injuries in recent seasons and had missed a significant amount of time for his previous club Manchester United, but the latest setback represented a bridge too far.
In Como’s press statement, the Serie A side outlined the new role that the former defender will have at the club. Varane will work alongside Osian Roberts (Head of Development) and Juliette Bolon (Head of Education) to support the club’s youth development.
During his time in England, Varane became an outspoken advocate for player welfare and in recent interviews, the former player has spoken about his vision for a freer football that rejects a homogenous game and embraces creativity.
