Real Madrid have issued an official statement confirming that key defender Alvaro Carreras has suffered a calf muscle injury.

“Following tests carried out on our player Alvaro Carreras by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in his right calf. His recovery will be monitored,” the club statement read.

As such, Carreras has now been ruled out of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg clash against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carreras picked up a knock to his calf during last week’s La Liga clash against Getafe. He did not play against Celta Vigo on Friday, although that he was because he was also suspended for an accumulation of cards.

But reports had suggested that his availability against the Cityzens was a doubt and his absence has now been confirmed.

According to journalist Arancha Rodriguez, Real Madrid hope to recover the left-back back in time for the second leg against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next week.

It could suggest that the summer signing might not be ready in time for the weekend’s La Liga clash against Elche as things stand.
