Real Madrid have officially confirmed their travelling squad for the upcoming La Liga clash against Villarreal, and despite several notable absences, there are some clear positives for the coaching staff ahead of a demanding away fixture at La Cerámica.
The headline news from the squad list is the return of attacking options.
Brahim Diaz has been included after rejoining group training following his participation at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Another major boost is the presence of Rodrygo, who has fully recovered from the injury that sidelined him in recent weeks.
While he is not guaranteed to start, his return gives Alvaro Arbeloa an extra attacking option from the bench, something Real Madrid have lacked in recent matches.
Defensively, there is cautious optimism surrounding Raul Asencio. Despite still managing a minor injury, Asencio has been named in the squad, underlining his importance given the current shortage of defenders.
Also returning is Alvaro Carreras, who missed the Champions League fixture against AS Monaco due to suspension.
However, the list of absentees remains significant. Ferland Mendy, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger all miss out through injury.
On top of that, Aurelien Tchouameni is unavailable due to suspension, further reducing Arbeloa’s options in midfield and defence.
To compensate, the Real Madrid coach has turned to the academy.
Youth defender Diego Aguado and midfielder Jorge Cestero have both been called up, highlighting the trust placed in La Fabrica during a period of squad adversity.
