In a concerning development, Real Madrid have confirmed that star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will miss the game against Olympiacos due to gastroenteritis.

“Following an examination today by the Real Madrid Medical Services, Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a viral gastrointestinal infection. He will miss the trip to Athens. His condition will be monitored,” the club statement read.

The update comes after news had emerged that Courtois did not train with his teammates today and had left the Valdebebas training facilities even before the final sessions had started.

This will come as a blow for Real Madrid, considering that the 33-year-old is one of the team’s most important players and a leader in the dressing room, where there is tension building of late.

Courtois has started all of Real Madrid’s 17 matches this season and has kept clean sheets in eight of them.

With the Belgian international now ruled out, Andriy Lunin will have to step up for the Merengues against Olympiacos tomorrow in Athens.

The Ukrainian international has not played at all this season but, in the past, has proven himself to be a reliable option to rely on in Courtois’ absence. And Real Madrid will need him to deliver as they look to end their three-game winless run.
