Philippe Montanier has been officially announced as the new head coach of AS Saint-Étienne following Eirik Horneland’s dismissal on Saturday evening.
Montanier has not managed since 2023, when he was released from his role as manager of Toulouse FC after he had led the club to their first major silverware with the 2023 Coupe de France trophy.
Saint-Étienne had cast a wide net in their search for a successor to Horneland, with Wilfred Nancy, Will Still, and Franck Haise all rumoured to be in the club’s sights. However, the experienced Montanier won out over the competition.
The 61-year-old will look to reignite Saint-Étienne’s promotion chase after the club stalled under Horneland. Les Verts were widely expected to win Ligue 2, but currently sit fifth in the table and seven points behind league leaders ESTAC Troyes with thirteen games left to play.
