Having brought an end to his association with FC Barcelona this summer, former club captain Sergi Roberto has signed for newly-promoted Serie A club Como, it has been officially confirmed.
“Como 1907 is excited to announce the signing of midfielder Sergi Roberto on a two-year contract,” the statement from the club read.
“The former Barcelona captain, who joined the club as a 14-year-old and went on to win seven La Liga championships and two Champions Leagues, joins the club as a free agent.”
Roberto spent his entire professional career at Barcelona, having first joined the La Masia youth setup as a 14-year-old in 2006, before going on to make his first-team debut in 2010.
The versatile midfielder enjoyed a decorated career at the club even though he was not always a guaranteed starter for the Catalans.
Roberto became the first captain for Barça last season following the departure of Sergio Busquets, but oversaw a trophyless campaign.
The 32-year-old’s contract expired on June 30 and he initially waited for the club to offer a renewal but with no guarantees of him being registered, Roberto opted to move on.
The midfielder now unites with former Barcelona teammate Cesc Fabregas, who is the manager of Como, a team that will be playing in the Serie A for the first time.
