Manchester United have officially loaned out Altay Bayindir to Celta Vigo until the end of the season.
The 28-year-old is a Turkish goalkeeper who joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2023, arriving as a backup to Andre Onana, who completed a switch from Inter Milan during the same summer.
Despite the Cameroonian’s recurring blunders in goal, Bayindir was never able to usurp him in the pecking order in his first years at the club.
Last season, Ruben Amorim gave the Bursa native a run in the first team at the start of the campaign while Onana was placed on the transfer list.
But in the end, Senne Lammens made the No.1 role his shortly after completing a late-summer transfer, so Bayindir was once again relegated to the bench.
This summer, Man Utd poached the services of Karl Darlow, a 35-year-old Welsh goalkeeper who impressed at Elland Road last season before seeing out his contract with Leeds United.
The free-agent signing is now the club’s recognised second choice behind Lammens, while the veteran Tom Heaton will continue to act as the third in line.
Therefore, Bayindir became surplus to requirements at Carrington, making his departure inevitable.
While the Turkish international was tipped to make a return to his home country, Celta Vigo recently emerged as the frontrunners in the race for Bayindir.
On Friday morning, Man Utd announced that the custodian has joined the LaLiga club on a season-long loan deal.
“Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has agreed to join La Liga side Celta Vigo on loan for the duration of the 2026/27 season, subject to registration,” reads the official note.
While the club’s statement didn’t disclose sufficient details, The Sun journalist Samuel Luckhurst claims that the Spanish club will cover the shot-stopper’s salary in full and will have an option to buy him at the end of the season.
Moreover, Man Utd added a sell-on clause, meaning that they would receive a cut should Celta Vigo sell Bayindir in the future.
Unfortunately for Bayindir, he never worked out for him at Man Utd. With his contract expiring in June 2027, the Turk’s experience at Old Trafford is effectively over, regardless of whether or not Celta Vigo exercise their buy option.
Interestingly, the 28-year-old isn’t the first goalkeeper to leave Man Utd this summer, and won’t be the last.
United have already agreed to send Andre Onana back to Trabzonspor for a second season. Moreover, the club has agreed to sell Radek Vitek to Middlesbrough. The 22-year-old should join the Championship club in the coming hours.
