Union Berlin have announced that they have completed the signing of Mikkel Kaufmann from Copenhagen. The fee and contract length are both currently unknown.

On his move to Union, Kaufmann said: “The change to Union is a giant step in my career and I am very happy that I can go it. In the discussions with those responsible, it became clear that as a young player, I have the opportunity to develop myself further here. I am looking forward to the new challenge and will do everything to unlock my potential and put myself at the service of the team.” Kaufmann will take the number nine shirt at Union.

Union’s managing director Oliver Ruhnert also commented on the transfer: “With Mikkel, we get a flexible striker who can act both in the storm centre and next to a wedge tip. His development in recent months is pointing steeply upwards, he will also show his goal danger with us. That’s why we are very satisfied that he chose us among many other options.”

Kaufmann has made a name for himself in the 2.Bundesliga. He spent one season on loan at Hamburg before spending last season on loan at SC Karlsruhe. The 22-year-old played 32 times for Karlsruhe scoring 10 and assisting nine times as the club finished midtable in the 2.Bundesliga.

Union now have Sheraldo Becker, Jordan, Kevin Behrens and Sven Michel as well as Kaufmann as their attacking options. The addition of Kaufmann is likely to open the door for Michel or Becker to leave the club, with both being linked with moves away recently.

This is Union’s third transfer of the window having acquired Alex Kral on loan from Spartak Moscow while also making the loan of Diogo Leite permanent, as they prepare for their first-ever season in the Champions League.
