FC Augsburg have officially parted company with head coach Sandro Wagner. The 38-year-old’s tumultuous tenure as a Bundesliga coach ended up lasting just 12 league fixtures. Wagner coached the Fuggerstädter to three league wins, eight losses, and one draw. The Bavarian Swabians currently sit in 14th place in the Bundesliga table and will not be partaking in the DFB Pokal this week after being eliminated by VfL Bochum in the second round.
Wagner just “celebrated” his 38th birthday this past Sunday with a 3-0 away loss in Sinsheim. Following yet another league drubbing at the hands of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Wagner found himself unable to conjure up any more explanations for his team’s failure to perform. German football journalists – particularly after listening to Wagner critique his team in the fashion he most recently did – expected that a separation would not be far behind.
As of this filing, it remains unclear who will lead Augsburg training on Tuesday. Two of Wagner’s assistants, Thomas Kasparetti and Sven Palinkasch, are also leaving the club. Kicker speculates that former Augsburg head coach Manuel Baum – who returned to the club in an administrative capacity this past summer – may be preparing to step in on an interim basis.
