Borussia Dortmund have officially completed the signing of Arsenal attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old arrives at the Westfalenstadion without a purchase option and will remain with BVB through the end of the 2026/27 campaign.

Get German Football News reported on Monday that Dortmund were continuing negotiations over a loan for Nwaneri as the Bundesliga runners-up scrambled to react to Giannis Konstantelias’ serious knee injury.

Dortmund’s need to return to the market arose suddenly after Konstantelias tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Saturday’s 2-0 Bundesliga victory over Hamburger SV. The Greek international had scored on an excellent league debut before departing shortly after the restart.

The Arsenal academy product offers Dortmund options both centrally and on the wings. Nwaneri has made 51 competitive first-team appearances for the Gunners, scoring ten goals, and remains under contract in North London through 2030.

The England U21 international also gained experience away from Arsenal during the second half of last season. Nwaneri spent the Rückrunde on loan with Olympique Marseille, scoring twice in nine Ligue 1 appearances.

Ethan Nwaneri adds another young creator to Dortmund’s attack

Nwaneri’s arrival continues the significant reconstruction of Dortmund’s attacking midfield undertaken this summer. Nwaneri does not constitute an exact stylistic replacement for Konstantelias. The left-footer’s profile bears greater similarity to Karetsas, but his ability to operate both in the attacking half-spaces and on the wings gives Kovač another technically accomplished option in precisely the areas Dortmund sought to strengthen this summer.

The move also represents a revival of Dortmund’s previous interest in the Arsenal talent. BVB explored the possibility of bringing Nwaneri to Germany before the current campaign, but no agreement was reached at the time.

Konstantelias’ injury ultimately supplied the circumstances for Dortmund to return.

For us, signing Ethan was now the best possible sporting solution. We are delighted that we were able to complete this shortly before the end of the transfer window.”
