Speaking to Sport Bild, new Union Berlin head coach Mauro Lustrinelli has confirmed that Christopher Trimmel will remain squad captain. The 39-year-old still made 39 appearances for Union across all competitions last year, registering five assists from his position on the back right flank. Trimmel brings with him the experience of 194 Bundesliga appearances.

Overall, entering his 13th season with die Eisernen, Trimmel has made 391 competitive appearances for his club. The 25-times-capped Austrian international is in line to become the club’s all-time appearance leader this season. Trimmel, midfielder Rani Khedira, and keeper Frederik Rønnow form the team’s leadership council. This year, they may be joining by rising Germany U21 international Aljoscha Kemlein.
