FSV Mainz 05 have officially completed the signing of defender Stefan Posch on loan. The former Hoffenheim professional is finally back in the Bundesliga after three-and-a-half years and endless rumors linking him with a return to Germany. Posch brings extensive Bundesliga experience back to the country in which he played some of his most productive years.

Como purchase Posch prior to loaning him out

The biggest potential obstacle to Posch’s return to Germany was solved by the 28-year-old’s now former Serie A loan club, Como 1907, purchasing him outright from now former parent club FC Bologna. Como acquired the rights to the 49-times-capped ÖFB international via a €5.5m deal. Posch then signed a new contract with Como valid until 2029 before being loaned out.

Posch’s Mainz loan likely does not contain a purchase option, though it’s possible (as is standard in the industry) that Mainz will owe Como loan fees should they manage to avoid relegation. Posch joins Augsburg striker Philipp Tietz and Stuttgart winger Silas as the third Mainz January signing brought in by the Rheinhessen as they seek to bolster their squad in the current relegation race.

Statements on Posch’s move

Stefan Posch is an experienced defender who is strong in direct duels,FSV sporting director Nico Bungert noted in a club statement. “He has already proven his quality in the Bundesliga and on the international stage. His qualities render him exactly the immediate reinforcement for the defense that we were looking for in the second half of the season.

The main goal must of course be to get off the bottom of the table as quickly as possible and throw everything towards the project of staying up,” the player himself added. “I am convinced that we can do it and I am eager to make my contribution.
