Schalke 04 have officially confirmed the signing of former Köln standout Dejan Ljubicic. As reported earlier, the 28-year-old will be returning to German football on a €750,000 transfer from Dinamo Zagreb. Ljubicic is back in the 2. Bundesliga just six months after departing newly promoted Köln.
Ljubicic brings with him plenty of German top flight experience as well, having made 83 appearances with Köln over the course of three seasons. The nine-times-capped Austrian international scored eight goals in the German top division.
“Dejan has demonstrated his diverse qualities in various positions during his previous stint [in Germany] and also in the Austrian national team,” Schalke personnel boss Youri Mulder noted in a club statement. “He quickly recognizes space, makes sharp decisions, and structures the game from the center. He also brings a high level of game intelligence to the table. We see Dejan as a reliable team player who is versatile.”
“For me, Schalke 04’s [current promotion push] constitutes a great challenge,” said Ljubicic. “The Schalke officials explained to me in very good talks where they see me and how I can strengthen the team.”
