Union Berlin have officially confirmed the signing of Swiss international Michel Aebischer from Pisa. Kicker reports that the 29-year-old midfielder joins the Köpenick-based club for an initial €3.5m fee, with bonuses potentially taking the deal to €4m. Get German Football News reported earlier this week that the midfielder had reached a complete verbal agreement with Union after the Bundesliga club initially submitted an offer worth around €3m.

The Swiss international brings considerable experience to Union. Aebischer made more than 90 competitive appearances for Bologna after leaving Young Boys in 2022 and has represented his country at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups as well as Euro 2024.

His arrival also addresses one of Union’s most obvious remaining squad needs. GGFN’s 2026/27 Union Berlin tactical preview highlighted uncertainty in central midfield during pre-season, with Mauro Lustrinelli experimenting with several combinations before appearing to settle on a double pivot.

Aebischer’s tactical discipline, passing quality and ability to contribute in both directions should provide Union with another experienced option in that structure.

Statements on Michel Aebischer’s Union Berlin move

“Michel is a very intelligent and versatile midfielder who has performed consistently at a high level for many years,” Union managing director Horst Heldt said. “He brings international experience, leadership qualities and great tactical discipline. His style of play gives a team balance and stability, while he also has the quality to make an impact going forward.”

“Union is a club with a clear identity and special values,” Aebischer himself added. “I quickly sensed in the talks how important cohesion and team spirit are here. I want to take responsibility on and off the pitch and enjoy a successful period together with the team.”
