VfL Wolfsburg interim head coach Daniel Bauer has received a permanent appointment. Wolfsburg confirmed the decision to install Bauer permanently shortly before Saturday’s home fixture against SC Freiburg. Sport Bild reports that Bauer has signed a long-term contract running two to three years.
Bauer joked about his prospects about getting the job on a permanent basis just last week. At the time, the 43-year-old also confirmed that he was actively negotiating with the club and that matters were proceeding well.
After losing his first league fixture in charge against Leverkusen, Bauer has delivered one draw and two consecutive wins. Importantly, Bauer has stuck with the same starting XI in the last three fixtures. This consistency has yielded seven points from four games and placed Wolfsburg four points above the relegation zone. Club management found itself impressed with the stability.
Bauer also filled in on an interim basis after Ralph Hasenhüttl’s dismissal last spring. A draw against Hoffenheim and a win over Gladbach give Bauer a total coaching record of 11 points from six games. This averages out to 1.83 points per match. Wolfsburg will be Bauer’s first official coaching appointment. He will still need to obtain his UEFA pro license over the winter break.
“Daniel took over the team again during a difficult phase and not only stabilized it, but also developed it further week after week,” VfL managing director Peter Christiansen noted in a club statement. “It was important for us to first reorganize the sporting management [via the hiring of new sporting director Pirmin Schwegler] and then make a well-founded decision about the coaching position together.”
“For us, it’s now a matter of continuing on this path with clarity, passion, and cohesion,” Bauer himself noted in his own statement. “I’m looking forward to working with my coaching team and the players to continue our development and get the most out of VfL.”
