RB Leipzig captain David Raum will sit out of the club’s final Bundesliga match of the season against SC Freiburg on Saturday.
Head coach Ole Werner confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Friday that the left-back will be given a much-needed break.
“If we still had goals like qualifying for the Champions League to fight for, he would certainly have played,” Werner said.
“But as it is, he has had an extremely demanding year – not only because of what has happened on the pitch, but also because of the energy he has put in off the pitch, and how he has helped lead the whole group.
“Now, with the World Cup coming up in the summer, he still has a heavy workload ahead. So I think a short break will do him good. There’s no need for anyone to be worried.”
Werner also confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi will be bewteen the sticks instead of Maarten Vandevoordt.
“Pete will start in goal. Maarten has been unable to complete a training session this week. Regardless of that, Pete has played a huge role in our season.
“For me, it’s also about allowing a player to have a good end to the season – especially since we know that Pete Gulácsi is one of the most influential goalkeepers of the past ten Bundesliga years.”
