Ole Werner has confirmed that RB Leipzig captain David Raum will miss Saturday’s final Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg, with Péter Gulácsi starting in goal ahead of Maarten Vandevoordt.
According to BuLi News, the head coach said on Friday that if Leipzig still had targets such as Champions League qualification, Raum would have played.
Werner explained the left-back needs a short rest after an extremely demanding year on and off the pitch, adding there is no reason for concern with the World Cup coming up this summer.
He praised Raum’s leadership and the energy he has invested in guiding the group, and said the break should do him good.
On the goalkeeper choice, Werner stated that Gulácsi will start because Vandevoordt has been unable to complete a training session this week.
He noted that, irrespective of that, Gulácsi has played a huge role this season and deserves a positive finish, calling him one of the most influential goalkeepers of the past 10 Bundesliga years.
