Olimpia earns away victory at Cartaginés in Quarter Finals

CARTAGO, Costa Rica – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup continued with CD Olimpia defeating CS Cartaginés, 2-1, in the First Leg of their Quarter Finals series at Estadio José Rafael "Fello" Meza in Cartago, Costa Rica.
Michael Chirinos gave Olimpia an early lead in the 9’, striking with a powerful right-footed half volley from the center of the box to capitalize on a cross from José Pinto.
Marco Ureña nearly equalized for the hosts in the 10’ with a right-footed hit from outside the box that rattled the crossbar.
Pinto had a good look in the 15’ in search of a second goal for the visitors, but his right-footed shot from the left end of the box was just wide of the far post.
Jorge Benguché doubled Olimpia’s lead in the 38’ with a right-footed finish from close range, recording his fifth goal in the 2025 edition. Yustin Arboleda picked up the assist on the play.
Ureña came close to shortening the deficit for Cartaginés in the 56’, but his header to the bottom left corner was saved by Olimpia goalkeeper Edrick Menjívar.
Ureña eventually cut one back for the hosts in the 69’, pushing the ball in from close range after an initial header from Mauro Quiroga. The goal was Ureña’s fifth in the 2025 CCAC.
Cartaginés generated several dangerous opportunities in attack throughout the remaining minutes. The efforts from Los Brumosos included a long-range attempt from Claudio Montero in the 72’ that was blocked before a save from Menjívar, followed by a shot from Bernald Alfaro from inside the box in the 73’ that was just wide of the right post.
Jerry Bengston looked to reestablish Olimpia’s two-goal lead in the 84’, but his right-footed finish from inside the box was just high of the crossbar.
Olimpia will aim to defend its 2-1 lead on home soil when the sides meet for the Second Leg next Thursday in Honduras.
