20 players could miss the World Cup semi-finals if they receive another yellow card in the quarter-finals, with France and Morocco notably exposed before their meeting on Thursday at 22:00.

According to L'Équipe, Morocco have five at risk, captain Achraf Hakimi, Azzedine Ounahi, Redouane Halhal, Bilal El Khannouss and Issa Diop. Ounahi scored twice against Canada in the last 16.

France must also tread carefully, with Bradley Barcola, Manu Koné and Michael Olise all booked during the stop-start last-16 tie with Paraguay. The FFF asked for Olise’s caution to be cancelled, without success. Any absence could be significant, particularly in Olise’s role.

England also have five players a booking away from a ban, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Marc Guéhi, Nico O'Reilly and Jordan Henderson.

Elsewhere, Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria and Miro Muheim are under the same threat. So too Norway’s Antonio Nusa, Spain’s Ferran Torres, Belgium’s Brandon Mechele and Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel.

All concerned would be in the clear if they avoid another caution in the next match, as bookings reset after the quarter-finals.
