Olympiacos midfielder Dani Garcia is no stranger to Spanish football. Having made his La Liga debut with Eibar back in 2014, the veteran midfielder went on to spend a decade in Spain, representing both Eibar and Athletic Bilbao before moving abroad.
Now at 35, Garcia is set to return to familiar territory as Olympiacos prepare to face Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Despite his vast experience, Garcia’s record against Barcelona has been far from ideal—just four wins in 23 encounters, alongside four draws and 15 losses.
Ahead of his much-anticipated return, the Spanish midfielder spoke to AS, sharing his thoughts on the upcoming challenge and what Olympiacos need to do to stand a chance at the Montjuïc.
When asked about how his side should prepare for such a high-profile clash, Garcia emphasised the importance of effort and self-belief. He said,
“We have to give our best. We all know how to play against teams like this.
“Against Arsenal, we showed that we can play well, and we hope to give a similar performance this time, but with a different result than we got in England.”
Given his age and experience, Garcia was also asked whether such games still excite him. Smiling, he replied,
“Yes, you don’t have to be 20 to enjoy this game. It’s a great match, and whatever your age, it’s great to come and play here.”
Reflecting on his team’s fighting spirit, Garcia made it clear he expects Olympiacos to show the same level of determination they did against Premier League side Arsenal. He stated,
“One that competes, like the day we played against Arsenal. We ended up losing 2-0, but we were in the game and stood up to it.
“This is a team with the Mendilibar stamp, and we’re going to give it a go.”

Garcia pointed out that while both Arsenal and Barcelona are elite clubs, their footballing styles are quite distinct.
As he explained, “The common factor is that both teams are big and are favorites to win the championship, but each has a different style.”
He further added, “Olympiacos has to be serious against them and give it their all.
“The two matches are different, but the level is very high, and we have to perform excellently to be able to face them.”
Having faced Barcelona more than 20 times in his career, Garcia admitted that the anticipation never fades.
“I have played against them many times with different teams, and we have had some great moments.
“Out of 23 games, I lost about 19 or 20 and won only three or four. I don’t remember exactly, but they were beautiful games, and the moments of victory are unforgettable.”
The midfielder was reminded of his past comments about Lionel Messi and asked whether Lamine Yamal is reaching that level.
Garcia responded thoughtfully, “Not yet, and I don’t think comparing him to Messi helps. He’s just starting his career.”
Commenting on the intense spotlight around the Barcelona prodigy, Garcia said, “Of all the things they say, you have to believe half of it.
“He needs to surround himself with people who protect him and give him good advice. He’s already a world-class player.”
Finally, Garcia praised the style of play that Flick has instilled in his team, saying, “Last season he played very attractive, always attacking football. I still find him very powerful.”
