During Sunday night’s Olympico, Amine Gouiri remained on the bench from kickoff to the final whistle—a decision Roberto De Zerbi addressed post-match.

OM lost their duel with OL in Sunday evening’s Olympico. The Marseille side didn’t quite hit their stride against Les Gones, who claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory. After the game, De Zerbi was questioned about his choices, especially his decision to leave Amine Gouiri on the bench.

“If Amine (Gouiri) didn’t play, it was a physical decision. I didn’t see him in top form this week. That’s all—these things happen. You can’t always be at peak physical condition. We felt that Aubameyang, Traoré, and Nadir could offer more. It’s true that the sending-off complicated things and changed the plans I had in mind. Bringing on Robinio Vaz instead of Gouiri was a tactical choice because I thought his pace could help us attack the space better and turn the game in our favor.” explained the Italian manager.
