Back at Olympique de Marseille since last summer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is once again thriving on the pitch, delivering one strong performance after another. At 36, the Gabonese striker is savoring every moment in the Marseille shirt, but he hasn’t forgotten the dark times he endured before finding his way to the Canebière.Speaking on the Troopz podcast, he gave a candid account of his brief spell at Chelsea—a move he now describes as a true personal and footballing disaster.

“A huge mistake”

Aubameyang didn’t mince his words: joining Chelsea in 2022 remains, in his view, the most regrettable decision of his career. The former Arsenal striker explained that he arrived in London in a very difficult mental state, following a traumatic burglary at his home in Barcelona and Barcelona’s desire to offload an attacking player to reduce their wage bill.

“Barça had to choose between me and Memphis Depay, and the only door open was Chelsea. To protect my family, I accepted, even though I didn’t want to,” he admitted.

He thought he would follow in Olivier Giroud’s footsteps, who had made a smooth transition from Arsenal to the Blues, but reality turned out to be very different. The swift sacking of Thomas Tuchel, replaced by Graham Potter, left him completely out of the picture.

Today, Aubameyang is enjoying a new lease of life at OM. More decisive, more fulfilled, he’s showing exactly why Marseille pushed so hard to bring him in.

“Here, I’ve rediscovered joy and happiness,” he says.

After a London detour he now calls a “huge mistake,” the Gabon international appears to have finally found the club that allows him to be himself again.
