Sunderland defender Omar Alderete was forced off late in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the Stadium of Light. Versus reports he is injured again and may have a muscular issue.

He started against the defending Premier League champions, but was replaced by Lutsharel Geertruida in the 80th minute after appearing to limp. Unicanal claims he will undergo tests, with Sunderland waiting to learn the extent.

Versus also noted he experienced muscle discomfort near the end of this month’s 3-0 win over Burnley, when he was substituted on 86 minutes.

Neither the club nor head coach Regis Le Bris has issued a concrete update on his condition. Alderete joined from Getafe in the summer and has made 22 Premier League appearances, missing a spell after a concussion at Wolves in October.

Le Bris preferred to stress the positives, saying his side made life difficult for Liverpool and that they want to keep the Stadium of Light a hard place to visit.

He also stressed resilience after defeats to Arsenal, 3-0 on Saturday, and Liverpool, adding that newly promoted teams can expect tough spells against the league’s best.
