Four years after becoming the youngest player in HSV history, Omar Megeed is on the move. The attacking midfielder has signed with Greuther Fürth as a free agent, inking a two-year deal with an option for a third. Fürth finished 16th in the 2. Bundesliga last season.
Megeed debuted for HSV in the 2. Bundesliga in August 2022 when he was just 16, coming off the bench in a 2-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld. Despite his early debut, he's made just one more appearance for the club, another late cameo off the bench in the 2. Bundesliga.
With HSV in the Bundesliga, his chances to get minutes have decreased further. Instead, Megeed has spent the past two seasons as a regular with HSV II in the Regionalliga, where he's made 69 appearances. He has also represented Egypt at youth level.
This summer, he left on a free transfer after seven years with the club. He joined Greuther Fürth initially as a trialist, but after impressing in his friendly appearances, he has signed on a permanent deal.
"We see him as a special, versatile player who can impress with both his physicality and his intensity,” said Daniel Meyer, Fürth's Sporting Director, in a club statement. “We want to take the next steps in Omar’s development together and bring him to the next level.”
Megeed, the club's new number 18, will hope to quickly find his place in a Fürth side that struggled mightily last season. However, Fürth have made some astute signings in recent years and were in the Bundesliga as recently as 2022.
