Cardiff City have just two weeks left to get as much transfer business done as possible before the new Championship season gets underway.

The Bluebirds are heading into their second campaign under manager Erol Bulut, as he signed a new contract with the Welsh side in the off-season.

Bulut has been keen to get players into the club, with Cardiff so far adding Calum Chambers and Chris Willock to the squad, both signings arriving on a free transfer.

It now appears that Cardiff are looking to add another player to their attack, with it emerging earlier this week that Leicester City player Kasey McAteer is of interest to the Bluebirds.

It was stated that Cardiff have held talks with the Foxes about a possible deal, but those talks were not said to be advanced.

Journalist Darren Witcoop has since revealed that Hull City have joined Cardiff in the race to sign McAteer on a season-long loan deal.

As the news emerges of Cardiff’s interest in signing McAteer on loan from Leicester, here we asked FLW’s Cardiff City fan pundit Ben Johnsey if this signing would excite him if it happened and if McAteer was an upgrade on Karlan Grant, who they had on loan last season.

He told FLW: “I can’t say I know too much about him, but from what I have seen and what people have said, he looks like a decent winger and someone who looks like they could be on the verge of having a breakout season.

“We have done it before with the likes of Jaden Philogene, so to have someone else come in and can offer speed and pace and a bit of sort of brilliance in the side.

“Hopefully he can do that, and Cardiff can get the deal done then and look to try and once again use the loan market to our advantage the way we have in previous years.

“Though, hopefully, if he does end up doing well and ends up moving to another Championship club next season, moving to the Championship permanently, that can be with us.”

McAteer is a product of Leicester City’s academy, having played for the club’s under-18s and under-21s before featuring heavily for the first team last season.

The 2023/24 season was a very memorable one for the 22-year-old, as not only did he become a part of the first team on a regular basis, but he helped the Foxes achieve promotion to the Premier League.

Last season, McAteer played 23 times in the Championship, during which he scored six goals. The attacker was a key part of the team from the start of the campaign, but unfortunately suffered a couple of injuries that hampered his season towards the end.

As well as playing in the league, McAteer also featured in the FA Cup and EFL Cup for Leicester, scoring one goal in his two EFL Cup appearances.

Leicester City’s McAteer needs to continue playing football this season

It was a very impressive season for McAteer in the last campaign. The 22-year-old was a prominent figure in Enzo Maresca’s team and squad.

However, the Italian has left the club to join Chelsea, and the Foxes are also now a Premier League team, which could mean his game time may not be as regular as it was last season.

Therefore, if Steve Copper doesn’t plan on relying on the player too much, then it is best that McAteer is sent out on loan to the Championship, as he gets another season of regular football under his belt.
