Papiss Cisse was the definition of instant impact after arriving at Newcastle United.
The Senegalese striker signed from Freiburg in the 2012 January transfer window and wasted no time in announcing his arrival in the Premier League.
Cisse scored 13 goals in just 14 league games across the second half of the campaign, as Newcastle narrowly missed out on Champions League football. His partnership with compatriot Demba Ba remains fondly remembered, a strike duo cemented in the ‘Barclays’ era.
Cisse’s greatest performance came on May 2nd 2012, as Newcastle won 2-0 at Chelsea. Spectacular strikes in each half kept the Magpies in top-four contention, with Cisse’s second of the night out of this world.
Having already opened the scoring with an instinctive flick and volley, he went one better late on at Stamford Bridge.
Shola Ameobi chested down a throw-in into the forward, who was out wide on the left flank. Without hesitation, Cisse unleashed a stunning strike with the outside of his boot that swerved unstoppably past Petr Cech. It was an audacious effort from an absurd angle, but one that left one of the Premier League’s great goalkeepers helpless.
An unforgettable goal.
