In Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland, Manchester City have two players who can swing a match in an instant. They aren’t the only two players in the City squad capable of doing this. In the case of Cherki and Haaland, their link-up play on the pitch has the capacity to break open any match. How devastating their link-up can be was on full display in Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth at the Etihad on Sunday. The scary part is that once their connection grows even further as they play together more often, they have the potential to decimate Manchester City’s opponents.
Rayan Cherki set up two goals for Erling Haaland against Bournemouth on Sunday. Both assists came from quick thinking from Cherki, and Haaland knew if he made the run in behind the Bournemouth defence, he’d be found. That is precisely what transpired at the Etihad. Manchester City’s cause was helped by Bournemouth’s high defensive line, but Cherki’s ability and vision found Haaland, and Haaland did the rest. It is a small sample size, but the potential is there for the Cherki and Haaland’s combination to become an x-factor for Manchester City that their rivals don’t have.
It does seem that this season could be a tight battle. Although Arsenal has a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, it looks like this season will be a tight battle at the top of the table. The games across the Premier League are getting tougher and tighter each week. Players who can decide a match in an instant will likely be worth their weight in gold this season. Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland are two of those types of players. Their combination on the pitch could be a major weapon that tilts tight games and a tight season in Manchester City’s favour.
Impact 🤝–
We saw a glimpse of what Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland can do together in Manchester City’s win over Bournemouth on Sunday. It is now hoped that their relationship on the pitch can continue to grow and develop the more they play together. If it does it could be one of the most significant attacking weapons that Pep Guardiola’s side has in it’s armoury.
