The form book always counts for very little in a Manchester derby. Manchester City enter today’s Premier League clash with Manchester United off the back of four consecutive wins in all competitions. Enzo Maresca’s side are building nicely into the 2026-27 season. However, they are far from the finished article and there is one area of today’s match which could decide the 199th Manchester derby. That is which side can control the transitions. Manchester United are built to thrive on the counter. Michael Carrick’s side has the weapons to exploit this area of today’s match. If Manchester City are to prosper at Old Trafford, they must control this aspect of today’s match.

Enzo Maresca wants to see his Manchester City side be themselves today, but he knows the threat that United pose.

Manchester City have predominantly played well across the four matches they have won against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry City, and FC Porto. They are far from the finished product as a team. That is also obvious to any keen observer of Enzo Maresca’s side. However, there is has been one susceptibility that City have displayed this season.

At times, Manchester City have been susceptible to being played through in midfield or vulnerable to quick attacks. The way that City set up in midfield and invert one full-back does open up space for their opponents. All four of Manchester City’s opponents have created openings this way. Against FC Porto, City’s offside trap quelled this threat exceptionally well. But it is an area of City’s play that needs to tighten up. Also, Manchester United’s ability to get in behind their opponents’ defence quickly is a strength of their play. If City can control this area of today’s Manchester derby it could set them on the path to victory.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is fully aware of this. He wants his team be themselves at Old Trafford today. Also, he knows they have to control the space in behind against Manchester United. He explained on Friday: “Be ourselves. It’s important also because it’s a test to be ourselves. In terms of them, I think it’s quite clear: very dangerous, don’t need many passes, quite direct, recovering the ball. They’re probably in this moment in the Premier League [the team] with more balls in behind. So it’s quite clear they recover and try contact in-behind. We need to be careful in transitions, and cover space in behind.”

How City deal with United’s threat on the break could well be the deciding factor in today’s Manchester derby.

Manchester United do have the weapons up front to get at Manchester City today. Bruno Fernandes is always a threat to find his teammates in behind. Marcus Rashford, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha have the required pace to trouble City if they lose possession in dangerous areas or their midfield is played through. It perhaps is the one pronounced advantage that United have.

How Manchester City contain that threat and their own susceptibility to it will go a long way to deciding today’s match. In time, when the City players have adapted to Enzo Maresca’s tactical tweaks, they should have a better grip on teams’ ability to get at them or in behind them. However, they aren’t at that level yet. It will take time to get there. They did show that they are grasping this requirement of Enzo Maresca’s against FC Porto. If they put in a similar type of defensive display at Old Trafford it may set City on their way.

Enzo Maresca knows the threat of getting in behind that Manchester United contain. If City can contain it, it may well lead them on the path to three points at Old Trafford. In a game full of battles, this may well prove to be the decisive one in today’s Manchester derby.
