‘One game at a time’ – Everton’s aims remain the same despite takeover says Sørensen

Everton manager Brian Sørensen says that this season’s aims do not change despite the club’s recent takeover.

The club finally found themselves under new ownership last month. Everton’s new owners are keen to back their women’s team and manager Sørensen has already been able to make four new additions in the January transfer window.

While Everton Women are getting some strong backing from the club, manager Sørensen says that the aims remain unchanged this season and that his side are taking things game-by-game.

“It’s still one game at a time,” Sørensen said when speaking in an Everton press conference. “We still need to stick to the principles of how we play and execute the game plan, building step-by-step.

“We’ve been very unlucky with injuries and didn’t have a squad that was able to compete in depth in this league. Almost all of the other teams have international double-up on most positions and that’s what we are trying to build back too. When we have that, it’s more even competition.

“It’s about consistency, taking one game at a time and maximising the effort there and then we will see where we end up. We are still in a position in the league where we need to look at the teams around us and make sure that we don’t drop further back. We have to have our eye on the ball and make sure we climb the table.”

The first game of the new regime sees Everton play host to Tottenham Hotspur in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round on Sunday. Sørensen says that his side are hungry for success in the competition.

He said “We definitely want an FA Cup run. Last year, we gave a good account of ourselves and we were really unlucky, losing to Chelsea 1-0. We created a lot of chances in that game and should have won it but it wasn’t meant to be.

“For sure, we are hungry, we want to win and showcase ourselves as best as possible.”

Freezing ice and snow could have made it difficult for Everton to prepare for this weekend’s game but Sørensen says that his side have been allowed to train on the men’s pitch for the very first time which is a sign of the club’s support.

He said “With the weather situation, we trained on the men’s pitch the other day for the first time ever, so that was a change. Normally, we are stuck with indoors but we’ve been out there [on the men’s pitch] and we are out there again today and tomorrow. Positive wins are coming in our direction for sure.”

Everton’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Tottenham Hotspur at Walton Hall Park kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
