It was reported by Sam Lee on the Athletic FC Podcast that Florian Wirtz and Morgan Gibbs-White loomed as two key transfer targets for Manchester City this summer. It was easy to see why this would be the case based on City’s need to add creativity to their midfield. This week has seen the future of Florian Wirtz dominate the news cycle. It appeared that Manchester City were in the race to sign the German international. Now, a new report from Christian Falk of CF Bayern Insider indicates that Florian Wirtz has decided that Bayern Munich is his next destination. That is a blow to Manchester City’s summer transfer plans, but it isn’t a fatal one by any stretch.
Christian Falk has reported via X that Florian Wirtz has agreed on a transfer to Bayern Munich. Furthermore, Falk reports that Bayern are willing to pay Bayer Leverkusen €100 million to sign Wirtz this summer. Falk also reports that Florian Wirtz would be willing to remain at Bayer Leverkusen until the summer of 2026. That way, he would only have a year left on his current contract and, therefore, force Bayer Leverkusen’s hand to sell him to Bayern Munich. That scenario is only in play if Wirtz doesn’t sign for Vincent Kompany’s side this summer.
The one positive from Christian Falk’s update is that Florian Wirtz has made a decision on his future before the summer transfer window opens. That leaves Manchester City with plenty of time to find an alternative to the German international. The prospect of Florian Wirtz playing for Manchester City was an exciting proposition to consider. But as with all German players, the threat of Bayern Munich always loomed large. It now seems that the Bundesliga champions have got their man.
It will now be interesting to see who Manchester City target instead of Florian Wirtz. Perhaps a move for RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons could be one City decide to pursue. Or they could decide to use what they have to add more creativity in midfield and fortify another area of their midfield. All scenarios are in play, and it will be interesting to watch unfold this summer.
